The reasons for the conflicts are complex, both related to private ownership of land, misinformation about Natura 2000, lack of trust in nature management institutions as well as lack of knowledge and awareness regarding the advisability of introducing a new form of protection &#8211; Natura 2000. The aim of this study was to analyse the perception of river valleys and the need to protect them by Natura 2000 Network (in the light of the ecosystem services concept) among local communities on the example of Carpathian rivers. The survey was conducted at the end of 2017 among 2221 residents from seven Natura 2000 sites covering river valleys in southern Poland using the \u201chome advisor\u201d method. The results show that the perception of protected Carpathian river valleys, as well as the perception of the ecosystem services performed by the river among local communities, are close to neutral. The function of the river as a fish source and recreational function are most perceived (by about 65% of respondents). The respondents&#8217; attitude towards the river is largely influenced by the flood problem. Half of the respondents heard about Natura 2000 Network and the vast majority of them (84%) consider the program necessary. The research results can serve as a good practice for institutions dealing with nature management both in the studied areas and other Natura 2000 areas in Poland and in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key words:<\/strong> Natura 2000, local communities, the Carpathian river valleys, ecosystem services, environmental awareness, the method of \u201chome advisors\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Streszczenie:<\/strong> Wprowadzenie Europejskiej Sieci Ekologicznej Natura 2000 praktycznie od pocz\u0105tku mia\u0142o charakter konfliktowy, prowadz\u0105c cz\u0119sto, zar\u00f3wno na etapie wyznaczania poszczeg\u00f3lnych teren\u00f3w chronionych jak i opracowywania dla nich plan\u00f3w zada\u0144 ochronnych, do sprzeciwu lokalnych spo\u0142eczno\u015bci. Powody konflikt\u00f3w by\u0142y z\u0142o\u017cone, zar\u00f3wno b\u0119d\u0105c zwi\u0105zane z w\u0142asno\u015bci\u0105 prywatn\u0105 grunt\u00f3w, dezinformacj\u0105 o Naturze 2000, brakiem zaufania do instytucji zarz\u0105dzaj\u0105cych ochron\u0105 przyrody jak r\u00f3wnie\u017c brakiem wiedzy i \u015bwiadomo\u015bci odno\u015bnie celowo\u015bci wprowadzenia nowej formy ochrony \u2013 Natura 2000. Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza postrzegania dolin rzecznych i konieczno\u015bci ich ochrony na obszarach Natura 2000 (w \u015bwietle koncepcji us\u0142ug ekosystemowych) przez spo\u0142eczno\u015bci lokalne na przyk\u0142adzie rzek karpackich. Badania ankietowe przeprowadzono w ko\u0144cu 2017 r. w\u015br\u00f3d 2221 mieszka\u0144c\u00f3w siedmiu obszar\u00f3w naturowych obejmuj\u0105cych doliny rzek w po\u0142udniowej cz\u0119\u015bci Polski przy u\u017cyciu metody \u201edoradc\u00f3w domowych\u201d. Wyniki pokazuj\u0105, \u017ce percepcja chronionych dolin rzek karpackich jak r\u00f3wnie\u017c postrzeganie pe\u0142nionych przez rzek\u0119 us\u0142ug ekosystemowych w\u015br\u00f3d spo\u0142eczno\u015bci lokalnych jest bliska neutralnej. Najbardziej dostrzegana jest funkcja rzeki jako \u017ar\u00f3d\u0142a ryb i us\u0142uga rekreacyjna (przez oko\u0142o 65% respondent\u00f3w). Na nastawienie respondent\u00f3w do rzeki w du\u017cej mierze wp\u0142ywa problem powodzi. Wiedz\u0119 o programie Natura 2000 wykazuje po\u0142owa respondent\u00f3w, a zdecydowana wi\u0119kszo\u015b\u0107 z nich (84%) uwa\u017ca program za potrzebny. Wyniki bada\u0144 mog\u0105 s\u0142u\u017cy\u0107 jako dobra praktyka dla instytucji zajmuj\u0105cych si\u0119 zarz\u0105dzaniem przyrod\u0105 zar\u00f3wno na terenie badawczym, jak i innych obszarach
