Dog parks in Warsaw – spaces for social integration or subtle isolation?

Abstract: Modern metropolises, such as Warsaw, are dynamically transforming their urban spaces to meet the evolving needs of their residents, both human and animal. One manifestation of these changes is the development of infrastructure dedicated to pets, including dog parks. The aim of this article is to analyze the distribution, accessibility, and functions of dog parks in Warsaw, as well as to assess their role in social integration and potential isolation of users. The field study included the inventory and mapping of 16 parks, as well as in-depth interviews with their users. The results showed that dog parks play a crucial role in the urban ecosystem, contributing to the building of social bonds, although they may be perceived as exclusionary spaces by those who prefer to walk their dogs freely. The article provides valuable insights into the development of pet-friendly urban infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of considering user feedback in the planning and modernization of these spaces.

Zarys treści: Artykuł zawiera rozważania na temat związku społecznie zrównoważonego rozwoju miasta i projektowania urbanistycznego. Wyrażając przekonanie, że równowaga społeczna jest jednym z podstawowych elementów zrównoważonego rozwoju miasta, autor zaznacza jednocześnie, że projektowanie urbanistyczne ukierunkowane na realizację celów zrównoważonego rozwoju może nie uzyskać akceptacji społecznej. W artykule wskazano na różne podejścia do zdefiniowania społecznie zrównoważonego rozwoju obszarów miejskich. Starano się również określić, które elementy projektowania urbanistycznego mają szczególne znaczenie dla jego realizacji, zwracając uwagę na przestrzenną formę miasta i kwestię dostępności przestrzeni publicznych. Rozważania zamyka omówienie społecznie uwarunkowanych zasad projektowania miasta.

Abstract: The article contains considerations on the relations between socially sustainable development of cities and urban planning. Expressing the conviction that social balance makes one of the fundamental elements of sustainable development of a city, it is pointed at the same time to the fact that urban designing which is directed towards realization of goals of sustainable development may not win social acceptance. The author indicates different attitudes towards defining socially sustainable development of rural areas. It is also attempted to determine which elements of urban designing hold special significance for its realization, paying particular attention to the spatial form of cities and the question of accessibility of public spaces. The considerations are concluded with a discussion of socially-conditioned principles behind designing cities.
