Abstract: City names are one of the most important tools of politics of memory – the politically conditioned shaping of public perceptions of the past. In Warsaw after 1945, the ruling communists pursued a naming programme in which they referred to figures, events and symbols associated with World War II. As a result, a canon of city names was created, which included both references to the ‘official’, communist vision of history and ‘alternative’ themes of an independence-oriented nature.
