Abstract: The development of Colombian cities is conditioned both by the growing number of the country’s population and the internal political situation, which is conducive to mass forced migrations of the rural population to the cities. Initially, the goal of these migrations was only urban centers located in the Andes, mainly Bogota and Medellin. Since the beginning of the 21st century, more and more people have settled in cities located in lowland regions – in the Caribbean Plain and in the eastern plains, i.e., in the Llanos Orientales. Sensitive ecosystems characterizing tropical areas are degraded as a result of invasive informal development – natural vegetation is destroyed, surface water pollution increases, the frequency of landslides and mudslides increases, and fauna is impoverished. The lack of an effective urban planning system and the high demand for new areas for informal development, as well as closed housing estates for the middle and upper classes, cause profound changes in the city’s ecosystem and its surroundings and expose buildings erected on land unsuited for this type of use to destruction.

Key words: informal sector in the city, environmental degradation, Villavicencio, urbanization in tropical regions, forced migration

Abstract: The considerations in the text comprise the topic of Warsaw urbanonyms that commemorate real figures. The aim of the text is to present the place and year of birth of each of the patrons, and to analyze the collected data in geographical and historical terms. The presented results prove that the majority of Warsaw patrons are Poles, born mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries in areas belonging to the Republic of Poland presently or in the past. There are much fewer patrons born in earlier centuries, and people born in other countries of Europe and the world.

Abstract: The concept of „Deaf/Forest Germans” developed on the basis of cultural processes taking place in the Carpathian Foothills in the period from the 14th to the 19th/20th century. The purpose of the article is to reconstruct the biography of this concept and to conduct its etymological analysis based on its oldest known records, mainly from Old Polish manuscripts and old prints. Above all, the authors focus on the source by the 18th-century encyclopedist Benedykt Chmielowski who formulated four definitions of this term. Based on it and other records, and some analogies from the territory of Poland and Slovakia as well, the authors try to answer the question about the nature of the settlement processes taking place in the Carpathian Foothills. Finally, they look at the concept through the prism of its German substitutes (Taubdeutsche and Walddeutsche).

Key words: Carpathian Foothills, Lesser Poland, Deaf/Forest Germans, Germans, concept

Abstract: The article concerns the utility of traditional maps as well as different forms of geovisualization in wine tourism (enotourism). At various stages, the so-called tourist experience (stages: anticipation, planning, travel-to, on-site, travel-from and recollection), the usefulness of analogue maps and geovisualization is different. The introduction and development of the Internet makes new forms of cartographic communication more popular and mobile applications has begun to replace traditional maps.

Abstract: Tourism is recognized as a priority sector for economic development in Rwanda. National parks are the main value of tourism development. The conditions of nature-based tourism were identified, and the development of tourism was presented, using statistical data on tourist arrivals, visits to national parks, and the development of tourist facilities. During the analysed period, there is an increase in the number of tourists visiting Rwanda’s national parks. The most popular are Volcanoes NP and Akagera NP. This is largely due to these parks’ better transport accessibility compared to Nyungwe NP and Gishwati Mukura NP. The development of tourism in national parks has a positive impact on all aspects of sustainable development, i.e., it is an impulse to improve the living conditions of local communities, the progress of the economy of regions and the state, and to strengthen of the idea of environmental protection in Rwanda.

Abstract: This article examines the fate of colonial monuments in Africa during the post-colonial period, especially the monuments that the Portuguese erected in Bissau in West Africa. The discussion is preceded by a detailed analysis of the sources that describe the iconoclasm of colonial monuments in selected African cities and a thorough description of the field studies conducted by the authors in Guinea-Bissau in 2020. As new African states replaced former colonies, the removal of European monuments in their capitals became a widely discussed topic. Some expressly political colonial monuments were removed at the time of formal decolonization, others have fallen down over the years, and yet others still stand. What distinguishes Bissau from every other postcolonial capital in Africa is that, while all its colonial monuments were dismantled after 1973, most of the plinths on which they stood have remained. These empty plinths are a symbol of decolonization – sui generis monuments of dismantled monuments. They speak volumes about the nature of the transformations that have taken place in recent decades. The new way of commemorating people and events in the symbolic and political landscape of Bissau, viz. murals created on the grassroots initiatives of young Bissau-Guineans, is also examined.

Key words: symbolic urban landscape, postcolonialism, decolonisation, monument, Bissau, Guinea-Bissau

Abstract: The article concerns the remains of the colonial heritage in the cities of sub-Saharan Africa. Although most African countries have been independent for several decades ago, in many cities and towns the general spatial structure is the same as in colonial times. This applies to cities and towns in the south part of Africa that were shaped by the apartheid system. The article discusses this problem on the example of the capital of Namibia, Windhoek.

Abstract: The research topic discussed in the article concerns the issues of territorial differentiation in the context of the wealth-poverty development dualism. The authors looked for factors that could influence the anchoring of municipalities in poverty, thus attempting to develop the current scientific discourse on the causes of long-term territorial differences. The presented data analysis focuses on the years 1995–2018 and includes units that in 1995 and 2018 were among the poorest municipalities in Poland, as well as those that managed to “get out of poverty”. Comparing the groups of municipalities, an attempt was made to assess the impact of internal resources as well as external conditions on the level of wealth. The methods of statistical analysis were used in the work: non-parametric statistical tests and panel regression. Comparing the results obtained in different groups of municipalities, it should be stated that the population potential, the level of entrepreneurship and the potential of the labor market are factors that have a limited impact on the explanation of the low level of affluence. The diversified influence of external factors related to key events in Poland and in the world was also shown.

Key words: poverty, municipality, panel regression, development factors, path dependency

Abstract: The development of tourism and with it the development of tourist infrastructure, has significantly influenced the lives of many people who use various more or less advanced applications on their touch phones on a daily basis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality, correctness and functionality of mobile tourist maps based on selected criteria. Then their usefulness was checked by means of appropriate research methods. The weaknesses and strengths of tourist mobile maps were noticed and described in detail. Colorful screenshots presenting sample functions of the applications were also included. To sum up the conducted research, relevant conclusions were formulated. Advantages and disadvantages of the studied mobile tourist maps were noticed and solutions were suggested that could enrich particular applications in terms of their functionality.

Abstract: We propose to look at the 1950s–60s Polish documentaries about Svalbard through the prism of visual geography. We analyse the films by Włodzimierz Puchalski and Jarosław Brzozowski. Svalbard’s landscape appears as a character in these films. The films have not been considered from a geographical viewpoint before, and some of them have not yet been studied at all.
