Urban names as a problem in translation: analysis of selected examples from the official Warsaw tourism website

Abstract: This paper focuses on urbanonyms as a translation problem. Analyzing the urban names selected from the official tourist portal of Warsaw in the source language (Polish), and their equivalents in the two target languages (English and Spanish), the author indicates the diversity of translation techniques and considers the possibilities of their unification with regard to specific types of naming, taking into account the functional aspect of the text, the needs of the recipient and the purpose of inter-lingual communication. The translation solutions presented, be it unique or repetitive, are illustrative of the difficulties requiring a systemic approach. The author emphasizes the influence of historical tradition on the formation of recognized equivalents, standing in some sense in opposition to the currently most desirable simple and unambiguous localizing equivalents.
